"People don't know how entertaining a study [genealogy] is. Who begot whom is a most amusing kind of hunting; one recovers a grandfather instead of breaking one's own neck -- and then one grows so pious to the memory of a thousand persons one never heard of before."
Horace Walpole to the Reverend Mr. Cole, 5 June, 1775
Moeglein Genealogy

Descendants of Joseph Mvgelein

Generation No. 1

1. JOHN JOSEPH JACOB MVGELEIN was born 24 Apr, 1826 in Bavaria, Germany, and died 22 Oct, 1867 in Madison, Dane Co., Wisconsin. He married SOPHIA BURGERS (Borgers/Borchers) 16 Dec, 1851 in Madison, Dane Co., Wisconsin. Joseph noted in his declaration of intent for naturalization that he came from Bavaria (Bayern), but didn't note the name of the town. There are three towns in Germany named Mvglingen, Mvgglingen, and Mvgelin, none of which are in Bavaria. Two are close to the Bavarian border, and may have been included in the country of Bavaria when Joseph was born. More research will be done in this area. Joseph entered America on May 20, 1848, at New York City, aboard the ship London, an America ship that sailed only between N.Y. and London/Liverpool. This passenger list gave his place of origin only as "Germany". He signed his own name as "Mvgelein", indicating that he pronounced it [MAY-geh-line], not [MOWG-line] as it is pronounced today. On 24 May, 1867, Joseph Moeglan (als. Moglan), purchased from C. H. Gegelschap, a $1000 life insurance policy. This was just two days short of being six months before his untimely death. "Mrs. Sophie Moglan" was paid $975.35 on the 26th of the same month. The information that Joseph supplied for the policy again places his place of origin as Bavaria, but without specifying a town. Joseph was buried in Forest Hill Cemetery, the cemetery used by Fort Randall -- Wisconsin's Civil War military training camp where the University now stands, Madison, Wisconsin. His grave was recently marked with a veteran's marker, by Lee Moeglein. The 1858 Madison City Directory has the entry Jas. Maglein, laborer, home on W. Canal between Main and Washington avenues. West Canal is now called Hancock. It appears that by 1860 he had moved to the house on Williamson, as in that census he was living near the Sprecher Brewery, which was located on the corner of Williamson and Blount.

Sophia was born in the Duchy of Braunschweig in about 1830. I have not yet found when she immigrated to the United States, but this should be forthcoming. Barely over a year after Joseph's death, Sophia married a second time, on 26 Oct 1868, to John Rising (or Reising). John was born about 1840 in Bavaria, son of Peter and Margaret Rising, and was a brewer. He gave Sophia at least one child who survived, Sophia, Jr. It would seem that since Sophia and the children were again known by the name Moeglein, by 1880, that John and Sophia were later separated or divorced. She died 29 Mar 1899. She was living with her daughter, Lena Meyer, in Minneapolis, Minnesota at that time, and was buried in Crystal Lake Cemetery there.

3. JOHN GEORGE FREDERICK MOEGLEIN (JOSEPH1) was born 22 May, 1855 in Madison, Dane Co., Wisconsin, and died 19 Feb, 1930 in Little Falls, Morrison Co., Minnesota. George established the Moeglein Market on First St. SE, Little Falls, in 1883. He operated this business until 1921, when he turned it over to his sons Charlie and F. George. In 1923, he became president of the Merchant's State Bank, until 1925. Even with these busy careers and raising six children, George found time for politics. He was elected Alderman of the First Ward, and served that post for 20 years. He then served as mayor of Little Falls from 1907 to 1912. In 1915 he was mentioned as being vice-president of the city council. He was Alderman-at-Large for Little Falls the last 16 years of his life. He married CHRISTINE WILHELMINE SCHMIDT 4 Mar, 1878 in Monroe, Green Co., Wisconsin. (Later newspaper articles give the date as 5 Mar 1877/8, but the parish records verify that it was the 4th.) In the marriage record, George was mentioned as being a teacher. Christine was born in Koblenz, Germany on 27 Sep 1852. Which Koblenz it was is still uncertain as there are three towns in Germany by that name, and one called Koblentz. Unsuccessful research has been focused on Coblenz-am-Rhein, near Frankfurt. This 'Coblenz' was always spelled with a K by the Germans, with the exception of a brief period of time around the turn of the century, according to Meyer's Orts gazetteer. This spelling irregularity may be a cause of confusion as the others were always spelled with a K in Germany. Census records point toward one of the towns near the Polish border. She was noted as coming from Prussia in the 1870 census, then just Germany in the rest, until 1920, when she is said to be from Berlin. She landed in New York 13 Jul 1867, aboard the ship Hermann from Bremen. She died in Little Falls, Morrison Co., Minnesota on 1 Dec, 1934. She was the daughter of Philip Schmidt and Marie Susanna ______.

ii. MARY FRANCES MOEGLEIN, b. Nov 1879, Madison, Dane Co., Wisconsin. (Her age was given as eight
months, not three, in the 1880 census...she could not have been born in March of 1880, five months before
her brother. Alice Piret noted that Frances "the youngest child" died at age four. No baptism or burial records
have been found for Frances in Madison, Richland Center or Little Falls, however, the family moved many times,
and should either birth or death have occured en route,
move around some. It has been questioned whether she was really a Moeglein or perhaps a neighbor child being
watched by the Moegleins at census time. and are Mary and Frances two different girls?)

He married JOSEPHINE MARTIN 8 Mar, 1888 in Little Falls, Morrison Co., Minnesota. Joseph changed his name to Maglein to more closely approximate the pronunciation. Soon after marrying Josephine, he moved to Everett, Snohomish Co., Washington. He was still living there in 1902, when he was listed in the Everett city directory as a butcher, living at 1916 Wall. For many years following, he was a miner in Dawson City and Fairbanks, Alaska. He finally settled in Duluth about 1929. He was listed as a farmer in the
